The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has condemned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for allegedly rejecting the nomination form of its governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Dr. Gbenga Afeni.
In a statement issued by the National Organising Secretary of the party, who is also the party’s flagbearer in the state, the party said: “It’s embarrassing and highly disappointing, as INEC deliberately did not accept the nomination form of a vibrant political party like APGA.”
Dr. Afeni said the action of INEC did not only dash the hope of the party in the state but also that of their numerous supporters from participating or winning in the forthcoming election in Ekiti State.
He urged Prof. Jega to “look downward and see what your subordinates are doing because of their selfishness and centeredness.”
The INEC spokesman in Ekiti State, Mr. Gbadegesin, however, faulted the allegation, saying the flagbearer should contact the national headquarters of his party in Abuja to find out what actually happened.
Gbadegesin added that it must be that the party’s secretariat did not forward the name of its flagbearer to the INEC on time, saying the electoral body could not reject the candidate of any party as long as they had met conditions of the Electoral Law of the country.
Dr. Afeni has alleged that INEC fixed the submission date for April 28, 2014 and Federal Government declared 25, 26, 27, 28, as public holidays, arguing: “Holiday is an attempt to rig out many political parties from participating because the INEC oversees the primary as was published in a national newspaper pages of April 11, 2014.”
He disclosed that the party’s primary was witnessed by INEC and security operatives, saying: “APGA was not aware that INEC worked on public holidays declared by Federal Government on Nigeria on April 29, 2014.”
According to him, all parties intending to submit their form were turned back but the same INEC gave rooms for substitution till May 18, Afeni alleged.
“Why can’t they give room for people, who want to submit nomination forms?” he queried.
