A Human Rights lawyer, Mr. Olakunle Alexander Fadipe, was on Thursday night, murdered by a lone assailant who invaded his home at the Harmony Estate, along College Road, Ogba, Lagos State.
The deceased, who was the Legal Adviser to a human rights group, Citizens Rights and Empowerment Advocacy Initiative (CREMA Initiative), was also a former member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and a member of the Editorial Board of The Guardian newspapers.
The incident which occurred at about 11pm, Thursday, saw the assailant stabbing the deceased’s man’s son, Folarin, and his mother-in law.
Eye witnesses said the assailant who was subsequently, arrested and taken to the Olowosokedile Police Station, might have gained access into the home by scaling the fence and attacked Folarin who had opened the door to switch off the electricity generator.
The boy who received severe wounds on the head and his right wrist immediately ran inside to alert the father on the presence of the intruder.
Eye witnesses further stated that the assailant upon seeing the late lawyer, demanded the sum of N500,000 which the late Fadipe begged he did not have at home, offering instead a lower amount and any other personal effect including the mobile phones.
The assailant insisted on the amount and threatened to kill someone if the amount was not immediately provided.
He thereafter, engaged the late Fadipe in a brawl, stabbing him with the butchers’ knife and a kitchen knife obtained from the late lawyer’s kitchen.
The assailant was reported to have had a better access to stabbing the lawyer, when the latter wrestled him to the ground while defending his mother-in law from being stabbed.
Sources said Fadipe was severely stabbed on the left side of the neck as well as the left side of the armpit, and the stomach. He lost a lot of blood.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ngozi Braids, and the Divisional Police officer (DPO) of the Olowosokedile Police Station Mr. Olatunji Ajimuda, confirmed the incident.
Braids said investigation into the case had commenced for further actions.
The assailant, it was learnt, has been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Ikeja, Lagos, for questioning.
“The suspect has been taken to SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) office (in Ikeja). His shot leg will be treated first before he can be questioned,” said a police source who did not want to be named because he was not authorized to speak on the matter.
“No one in the estate can identify the arrested assassin of Barrister Fadipe, but he confessed to OPC men who shot him while escaping that he had been hiding behind the fence for over an hour”, the officer added.
Leye Fadipe, the deceased’s brother, said that the family was still in shock and cannot link the death of the lawyer to anyone.
“It’s an assassination but we cannot finger anyone and we don’t know the motive” he said.
The members of the Harmony Estate Community Development Association, CDA, whom the deceased served as Chairman, refused to speak about the incident.
However, security in the estate, where the deceased’s family lives, has been tightened following the incident.
Security men at the entrance to the estate now screen and search visitors before allowing them entry.
Until his death, Mr. Fadipe, a native of Ile-Ife, Osun State, and a 1987 law graduate of the University of Lagos.
