Actress-turned-politician, Offiong Kate Henshaw, who is aspiring to represent Calabar South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said she joined politics to serve her people, not to enrich her pockets.
Henshaw said she was taking a break from the movie industry to join politics for a period of eight years. She spoke at a programme monitored in Lagos and noted that lengthy stay in politics is one of the major reasons for much of the problems in Nigeria, adding that it equally breeds corruption on the part of government officials.
The Nollywood star also said that though she had no money to share, she would not enter politics for the purpose of financial gain, instead to “push” herself to make the country better.
“I don’t hope to be there forever. I just want to do, make noise, leave when the ovation is loudest. That’s the best way. I don’t want to be there for 10 years, 12 years, 16 years, that’s the best way. I want to do other things. Four to Eight years. That’s the limit. You can hold me to my word. There has to be another person, who will go through the process, who would want to try.
“That’s the problem. Too many people stay in one place for so long and other people just lose hope and say why would I even bother.”
On how much money she had and was willing to dole out, she said: “There’s no money. I can’t match the people who have been in the system for 20 to 30 years. I’m going with God and my heart. I’m not sharing money. If you continue sharing money, it will never stop. If you want a change, a true change, then vote for me and you’ll see the change. But if you want money, hey, go for money and stay where you are and don’t ever complain.”
On her campaign website, http://www.campaign.ng/offiong-kate.henshaw, the veteran actress insisted:
“I have a strong interest and desire to serve my people and especially to show that there is a better, more humane way to do things when you are in a position of leadership. Putting the people first and being accountable to them as well as being accessible.
“I am also very keen to promote and champion the provision of clean water, good roads and sanitation in my constituency.
“One of my key areas of project focus areas will be provision of affordable education and quality healthcare especially for expecting and young mothers,” she said.
