Jonathan’s Successor: My Advise To Northern Nigeria By Ahmadu Ali

The Director General of President Goodluck Jonathan’s Organisation, Ahmadu Ali says the Fulani socio-cultural group – Miyyetti Allah, the Yoruba socio cultural groups – Afenifere, and Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) have all endorsed the re-election bid of President Jonathan.

Ali said this at the campaign rally of the PDP on Saturday in Kaduna.

“We should tell ourselves the truth, Miyetti Allah, Afenifere and OPC have endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election”.

He said the North should start grooming a non-dictatorial leader who is between the ages of 40-50 to take over from President Jonathan in 2019.

“I want to tell my fellow Northerners to start grooming a 40-50 year-old candidate that President Goodluck Jonathan will hand over power to in 2019 and not a dictatorial leader who attempted to kidnap my friend late Umaru Dikko. Is that the person you want to vote for? God forbid!” Ali said.

Ahmed Makarfi, a serving Senator, in his remarks said the PDP “will use our power of persuasion to ensure that, PDP is voted on the 14th and 28th of this month.

“I assure you that by this persuasion and consultations by the Vice President, the governor, many stakeholders and I will deliver Kaduna state to PDP,” he added.

Presidential Debate: APC Shields Buhari’s Intellectual Laziness, Says Jonathan *Charges APC ‘Prove You’re a Party of Progressive Intellectuals At Debate’

The Presidential Campaign Organisation of President Goodluck Jonathan has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of stopping its presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari from participating in a presidential debate being organised by the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) as a means of shielding the intellectual laziness and inability of the former military dictator to constructively engage contemporary national issues in a live television and radio debate from Nigerians and the international audience.

Jonathan who spoke through the Director of Media and Publicity of his Campaign Organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, stated that the APC knows that General Buhari will flunk it if he is subjected to the rigours of debate on national issues relating to governance and development.

Jonathan’s Campaign body said it was aware that the APC had already expressed its concerns, when approached by an international news channel for a debate, about the intellectual acumen of General Buhari, and had assured the news channel that it was only comfortable with its vice presidential candidate, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, who has capacity to feature brilliantly on the programme.

“We have just read a report in the media credited to the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation that the party would not allow its candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, to participate in the radio and television presidential debate organised by the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON).

“The APC accused the organisers of the debate of unhidden bias and campaign of calumny by some key organisers of the programme against the corporate political interest of the party and its candidates.

“Whilst we will not bother ourselves with the many reasons adduced by the APC, we wish to state that we see the APC decision as an attempt to shield its presidential candidate from displaying his intellectual laziness and inability to constructively engage contemporary national issues in a live television and radio debate.

“We had envisaged that the APC would be reluctant to expose General Buhari to the rigours of a live television debate because the opposition party knows that its candidate will flunk it.

“If the APC truly believes that it is ‘a party of progressive intellectuals’, as it claims it should allow General Buhari to prove that at the debate.

“Should the APC fail to participate in the debate, it would also show the disdain both the party and its candidate have for the Nigerian people, denying them the opportunity to make informed choices on the basis of what each candidate will articulate as propositions on issues that will be raised.

“We are convinced that General Buhari does not have what it takes to sustain a coherent argument on germane issues of governance and development.

“We challenge General Buhari to a debate on any national and international medium of mass communication and our candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan will be ready to participate.

“On the other hand, President Jonathan’s running mate, Vice President Namadi Sambo, is also ready to participate in the debate and any other debate.

“Our presidential candidate and his running mate will not raise flimsy and escapist excuses such as “unhidden bias” and the like, since we believe that they are well-rounded intellectuals who have been prepared by their experience in office to answer any question under the sun on the governance of our nation.”, Jonathan Campaign group noted.

Boko Haram: Arrested General Ransome-Kuti, Other Officers May Be Court Martialed Over Baga Attack

Nigerian military authorities have come down heavily on suspected senior military officers sabotaging counter-terrorism operations in the country as over 10 senior officers, including a Brigadier-General, have been arrested and are currently telling the military hierarchy what they know about a recent attack carried out by the Islamic insurgent group, Boko Haram.

The officers may be charged before a military tribunal as soon as investigation into their complicity or otherwise is completed.

According to the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Chris Olukolade, the investigation of senior army officers follows alleged shirking their responsibilities during the attack by the militants on Baga.

Those arrested so far include Brigadier-General Enitan Ransome-Kuti, his Chief of Staff Lt. Colonel G.A Suru, the Commanding Officer of 134 and 174 battalions, Lt. Colonel Haruna and one Major aliyu.

The two Nigerian Army battalions are under the Multi-National Task Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Baga, attacked by the insurgents.

Speaking on the arrest, General Olukolade said that the arrested officers were being investigated because at the time of the attack on the multinational headquarters in Baga, Brigadier-General Ransome-Kuti and his men were fully in charge of the military formation.

He said it was disappointing that the attack on Baga was not repelled by both battalions, despite having the necessary weapons to carry out the necessary operations.

On January 3, 2015, suspected members of Boko Haram attacked the base of the Multinational Task Force in Baga, Borno State, dislodging the soldiers there.

Reports say the troops were warned to be on alert following intelligence reports that terrorists would strike between January 22 and January 25.

Eyewitnesses, Channels Tv reports, said that the attack started around 5am when residents started hearing gunshots as the insurgents tried to gain entrance into the MNJTF premises.

APC Candidate Says Ekiti Gov Abused Bible Verse, Insulted Muslims as Buhari Attacks Punch, SUN newspapers Over Fayose’s Frontpage Adverts

Sample Photo of The Advert
Sample Photo of The Advert
Governor Ayodele Fayose has come under fire from the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), over a front page advert the Ekiti State governor paid for in The Punch and Daily Sun newspapers on Monday morning.

Buhari, in a Facebook post, accused Mr. Fayose of abusing a Bible verse and insulting Muslims, especially Northerners.

*General Muhammadu Buhari, sick like late Yar'Adua?
*General Muhammadu Buhari, sick like late Yar’Adua?

The governor had paid for front page adverts in the national dailies, depicting three former Heads of State from the North, who are Muslims and died in office, together with the APC presidential candidate, suggesting that what happened to them may happen to Buhari.

Fayose, in the advert urging Nigerians to “vote wisely” by casting their votes for President Goodluck Jonathan, said “NIGERIA…‘I have set before thee LIFE & DEATH. Therefore, choose LIFE that both thee and thy seed may LIVE (emphasis not ours)’”.

The advert, which has attracted reactions of Nigerians on the social media, was described by Buhari as a breach of the peace pact signed last week by leading presidential candidates, including President Goodluck Jonathan.

“First, it is totally unprofessional and abusive to Ethical codes of Journalism for Punch and Sun Newspapers to publish such content. Punch and Sun Newspapers must revoke the advert immediately and apologize to the people of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari and the APC for such folly.

“Second, if till now, there is no denouncement of the post from PDP and GEJ (Goodluck Ebele Jonathan), it means that they support it because Fayose is a stakeholder of the party, and a front man for GEJ’s campaign.

“GEJ signed a peace pact last week against election violence and he, through the insensitivity of this advert, is the first to break that pact.

“The Jonathan administration is cruising on lies and propaganda. It is bent on amassing votes to siphon more public funds and has no interest of Nigerians at heart. It is bound to fail”.

The Facebook post reiterated Buhari’s commitment to peace and urged Nigerians to get their Permanent Voters Cards and “vote these bigots out of power come February 14”.

“Encourage your neighbors, let them know that GEJ has nothing to offer them but lies and empty promises”, it added.

Show Your Certificate Or Forfeit Election, Northern Youths Tell Buhari

A group of youths under the umbrella of Northern Youth Forum (NYF) has challenged the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, to produce his certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for proper electoral contest. According to the group, failure to do this would automatically put the supporters of the formal head of state to shame.

The group dismissed Buhari’s statement that the original copies of his certificates were in the custody of the military authorities, reminding him that such a claim was not enough to fulfill the constitutional requirement.

“General Buhari should do what is required of him by presenting his certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as other presidential candidates have done, instead of hiding behind the fig leaf of constitutionalism,” said Bello Gambo Bichi, National President of the group, in a statement released in Kano.

He notes however that it is true that the relevant section 131(d) of the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria does not require Buhari to physically present his certificates but to only show that he “has been educated up to at least secondary level or its equivalent.

It is also clear that the “spirit of that provision demands that he should present certified true copies of his original certificates because that is the only way that INEC will determine that he has been educated up to secondary school level.

“Clearly, Buhari contested the 2011 and two previous elections without presenting his certificates to INEC.

“This time around INEC, civil society organisations and the international community should mount pressure on Buhari to comply with this simple demand, by retrieving his certificates from the Army authorities and submitting them to the electoral commission, otherwise he should not be allowed to contest the 2015 election,” the NYF said.

How Tinubu, Obasanjo Denigrate the North

SPECIAL REPORTS

In 2007, a wounded Olusegun Obasanjo foisted a sick and almost dead Umoru Yaradua on the PDP as its Presidential candidate with a grand design that would have seen Obasanjo remain President beyond 2007, if Yaradua had died before the elections.
You should also remember that the vice presidential candidate of the PDP, then, now President Goodluck Jonathan escaped an assasination attempt by the whiskers.

This foiled assassination attempt has been linked to the then Federal Government as one of the desperate tenure elongation designs of the then President.

When Yaradua eventually lived to see the end of 2007 elections and was sworn in, Obasanjo reluctantly retired to Ota farm and wanted to remain President by proxy, but the quiet but steely willed Yaradua resisted that attempt and succeeded in temporarily retiring Obasanjo to a full time farmer in Ota.

Obasanjo was one of the happiest men on earth when the cold hands of death eventually snatched Yaradua away.

He looked around and saw that the only way to remain relevant was to lend his voice to the popular demand of most Nigerians for Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to be elected as our President.

After Jonathan’s victory at the 2011 polls, Obasanjo characteristic greed wanted to remain in charge.

There are allegations from credible corners that Obasanjo sought to be given full charge over some viable parastatals of the FG, but President Goodluck Jonathan turned down that proposal without thinking about it twice.

While President Jonathan was not unaware of the former President’s capacity for trouble, he preferred to stand on the side of ordinary Nigerians than mortgage the future of the entire nation for the sake of retaining one man’s support.

Jonathan is more committed to returning power to the North than all these troublemakers from the Southwest parading themselves as lovers of the North.

Left to Obasanjo and Tinubu, power should never come to the Southeast neither should it ever return to the North.

Should Goodluck Jonathan complete his second tenure, he is likely to support the emergence of a President from the North and a vice President from the Southeast, and this prospect is what Obasanjo does not want to live to see.

Hence, he found a fitting ally in the person of Tinubu, who he has partnered with to advance the Yoruba oligarchical agenda.

I should suspect that both Tinubu and Obasanjo share a belief that Buhari will not see out his first term as President.

Buhari’s leaked medical report suggest that he is suffering from one of the most dangerous cancers, and if that is the case, Nigeria may yet be in the hands of a vegetative President who will spend most of his time undergoing chemotherapy than tacking the legion troubles bedeviling our dear nation.

However, Tinubu and Obasanjo are more interested in perpetuating power in Yoruba land than thinking about the future of Nigeria.

It is therefore imperative that my brothers and sisters from the Northern part of the country understand who truly loves them and who doesn’t.

Tinubu is the sole-proprietor of the APC and his sole aim is to ensure that a Yoruba man sneaks back to the Presidency as soon as possible.

To him and his new found partner, Olusegun Obasanjo, Northern politicians are some kind of puppets who can be easily manipulated. It is left for the Northerners to prove them right or wrong.

They can prove them wrong by voting massively for the PDP, whereby taking their political fate, effectively in their own hands, they can prove them right by voting for a sickly, Yoruba imposed Muhammadou Buhari.

#NigeriaDecides: Buhari is Clueless About How To Revive Economy, Can’t Remember His Phone Number, Says Jonathan

So Clueless? Can you imagine?

Pa Buhari can’t remember his phone number –Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday during a rally in Enugu said that the All Progressives Congress candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), cannot remember his own mobile phone number.

Jonathan, whose unscripted address was mostly a response to previous statements made by Buhari, accused the APC presidential candidate of deceiving Nigerians by promising to revive the economy without explaining how he would achieve the feat.

The President wondered how Buhari would develop the country’s economy, a feat he could not achieve while he was in office as head of state between 1983 and 1985.

“Is it now that Buhari cannot even remember his own phone number that he can change the economy of the country.” Jonathan asked.

The Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate said that although he did not like to “go personal during campaigns,” “sometimes circumstances demand that certain things must be said.”

Jonathan said that Buhari belonged to the medieval age, adding that he (the APC candidate) intended to run the Federal Government as a medieval king.

He said, “We cannot run the government as if we are in the medieval age; we cannot run a government where somebody said he would throw people into jail.

“You are not a medieval king – a medieval king can throw you into jail but we have to follow the rule of law because we cannot go back to the old days.”

Jonathan, however, read the speech made by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd.) after overthrowing Buhari’s regime through a military coup on August 27, 1985 to justify his claim that the APC candidate does not keep his promises.

Babangida, in the portions of the address read by Jonathan, justified Buhari’s overthrow by pointing out that the latter did not live up to the promises he made to Nigerians when he ousted a democratically elected civilian government headed by Alhaji Shehu Shagari in a military coup.

Noting that Buhari “deceived Nigerians” from 1983 to 1985, Jonathan quoted Babangida as saying, “The initial objectives of Buhari’s intervention were betrayed as there was a general deterioration of standard of living in the country.”

The PDP candidate also pointed out that Babangida accused Buhari of being “too rigid in his attitude to national issues” and “became alienated from the people” in the course of his stay in power.

He, therefore, challenged Buhari to tell Nigerians how he intends to revive the economy.

Jonathan said, “They are telling young Nigerians that they are going to change the economy but they have not told us how they want to manage the economy more than us.

“If they say they want to change agriculture, they should tell us the weak links in the agriculture value chain and what they want to do about it.

“I said in Lagos that I want to work with young people, not to deceive people.

“I am not going to run the government based on my habits, I am going to run the government according to global best practices.”

Jonathan also insisted that he was committed to the campaign against corruption.

“There is no government that has fought corruption more than we do,” he said, noting that some previous administrations pretended to be fighting corruption while oppressing their enemies.

He recalled that Buhari jailed some prominent Igbo politicians while in office as head of state, including former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme and former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo.

Stressing that Buhari jailed politicians on trumped up charges, Jonathan said, “You can no longer carry people and put them in prison for 301 years.”

The President equally accused Buhari of having a wrong idea of corruption.

According to him, Buhari believes that every wealthy Nigerian is corrupt.

He said, “If a Nigerian businessman has a private jet, then you are corrupt but if a South African has a private jet then you commend him.

“If you have a good house, then you are corrupt, if you have a good car then you are corrupt – that is his definition of corruption.”

Jonathan accused his opponent of making spurious claims against him.

The President said, “They are saying that government is corrupt but they are not telling us what they are going to do to stop corruption. Let them go back to their consultants to coach them, then I will listen to them.

“They should tell us how they are going to manage the economy better than we do.

“They are saying we stole foreign reserves, nobody can steal foreign reserves – spurious allegations.”

He also reiterated his claim that Buhari did not equip the military while he was the head of state.

Jonathan said that he had done more than his predecessors to shore up the country’s defence.

“For 30 years, we had only one frigate, now we have four additional frigates,” he said.

In the same vein, he pointed out that Buhari did not find any woman worthy enough for appointment when he was the military head of state.

The President asked Nigerians to assess him and Buhari by looking at how they performed during their respective periods in office.

He said, “They have deceived us before and they want to deceive us again.

“Go and find out whether these people are deceiving you or are telling you the truth.

“People are assessing me because I have run this country for some years – they have run this country for two years.

“They came with promises but immediately they came in, what they did was to jail Jim Nwobodo for 201 years.”

Lagos Doctors Prostest Non-Payment of Salaries

Protesting Doctor in Lagos State

Protesting Doctor in Lagos State

Lagos State doctors in the employment of the state government on Friday protested non-payment of their two months’ salaries and non-employment of resident doctors in the state.

The doctors in the state controlled by the opposition, All Progressives Congress (APC), under the aegis of the Medical Guild Association, also demanded an end to employment of doctors as casual workers.

They equally called for an end to alleged victimisation of doctors.

The protest, which took place for about an hour, was held at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

The Chairman of the guild, Dr Biyi Ikufo, urged the government to meet the demands of the doctors in order to prevent a strike.

“We want the government to pay those withheld salaries of August and September, 2014 and to stop employing doctors as casual workers which it has been doing since 2012.

“These workers have no career path; they can be dismissed at the slightest notice, and we want the government to resume training of specialists at LASUTH. They are no longer employing doctors for specialist training; in a few years, there will no longer be specialists to render services to Lagosians,’’ he alleged.

The chairman said that the protest was held to bring the issues to the notice of the public in the hope that the government would listen to the doctors.

“When we go on strike, the people who suffer are members of the public. That is the why we are bringing this protest to the public space.

“We did this in the hope that, this time, things will change,’’ he said.

The Vice-Chairman of the guild, Dr Oseni Saliu, said that doctors would continue to fight for their rights, and urged the members of the public to appeal to the government to meet their demands.

“We are ready to render services to our people; we are not ready for anybody to subjugate us; we will fight for our rights.

“If the government continues to push us and there is a need for an action, we will take the action, “ he said.

In his remarks, the President, Association of Resident Doctors, LASUTH chapter, Dr Abdusalam Moruf, said that there had been no residency training programme at the hospital since 2011.

“LASUTH has been turned into a general hospital because residents are not being employed, and as such, no one is graduating to become a consultant. There is also a reduction in the specialist manpower of the society.

“Diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, stroke and some complex surgeries that need specialist attention will no longer be adequately treated because there are not enough specialists to handle them,’’ he said.

Moruf urged the government to employ more resident doctors, pay their salaries, stop victimisation of doctors and stop employing doctors as casual workers.

My Candid Nasiha to General Buhari By Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi

MY CANDID NASIHA TO GEN. BUHARI.

Assalamu Alaikum

The Humble People’s General.

I know I have access to your privy but this is meant for others to learn also.
Sheik Gumi
The prophet -peace be upon him- told one of the most honest and truthful of his companions Abu Zar Algafary: “oh Abu Zar, I truly love for you what I love for myself. I indeed see that you are weak so never accept to lead even two people and never accept safekeeping of the orphans wealth’

An honest and candid advice from the prophet that is still valid today for any leader who’s weakness borders on leadership qualities.

The reason for Abu Zar’s weakness has nothing to do with his credibility or truthfulness. Never! The prophet was narrated as saying: “there is nobody under the shadows of trees or bare sun that is more honest in speech than Abu Zar”

Abu Zar – May Allah be pleased with him- is ascetic and inmaterialistic. Abu Zar is incorruptible. And yet he is not suitable for leadership.

I am not claiming to be even by an atom’s weight anything close to our noble prophet, yet I am encouraged to give you these same advice by the virtue that you are not also close to Abu Zar in piety. We are living in a time of great tribulations and fitnah especially for this Ummah because of our collective iniquities, ignorance of religious instructions and the love of Dunyah.

Sir, your weakness is not in your past impeccable record of accountability of public wealth and the fight against corruption and indispiline. Your weakness is in your inability to control men compounded further by your strict and obsessive rejection of corruption.

Don’t be surprised. You may need to understand that Islam being a pragmatic religion allows the use of Zakkat and public wealth as an instrument to pacify and lure influential people for the sake of rightouness, peace and stability. In modern governance today it translate into the security vote.

Thus men are also controlled by money. So if your policy of governance is obsessibly centered on sealing tight the use of money you will have great problem with men. An Arab poet said: “a fool cannot be the leader of his people but the true leader of the people must feign foolishness”.

It’s convenient for your ardent supporters to quote copiously from the annals of history your great achievements but when your failures and weaknesses were pointed out they say that was in the past. Is the lessons of past history only good for the positive achievements? Doesn’t that also explains our incessant failures?

Your Excellency, good intentions are never enough. In the past, because of your clean records and straightforwardness you were lured by men who want only the vanities Dunya to uproot a young democracy on the caprices of fighting corruption. Corruption is no doubt an evil but there is a more monstrous evil than corruption. That is turmoil and insecurity. Peace and stability are the most important part of governance that no price is to high for them.

The lack of peace, stability and security is the major predicament of this nation since independence. So when you were naively used by men to derail one, that is the greatest disservice you committed to the nation the ills of which we are yet to recover from. Do you truly believe Allah is still not in cognizance of that? You were lead to uproot a duly elected leader and incasserate him for close to two years knowing fully well that he has no charge of even the corruption that was labeled against him. Yes, Shagari was the leader and therefore he bears all the responsibility of misdeeds in his government, so also you were a leader and you should bear all the responsibility of derailing the peace and stability of governance in this country as a consequence of that putsch.

You weakness in control of men became evident when the very people that used you to revolt against a constituted authority came back to uproot you from the seat of power. Your own kinsmen without a gun cocked in your defense. Today the corruption you were deceived to fight against has reached unimaginable level coupled with the worst state of insecurity and peace in the nation. There was just recently an attempt on your life like many of us.

All this because you the honest people that are given the privilege of strengthening the Armed forces left it to meddle in politics. We thus lost everything. Neither the power nor the security.

A believer is not stung from the same hole twice. Men used your innocence before to get power and dump you. Please be sensible today. Some other men still want to use you to get power and surely they will dump you again. You don’t share the same philosophy at all. Even though as I explained later, your obsession and philosophy of fighting corruption is not the priority of Nigeria today. What Nigeria needs utmost now is peace and stability. This can only be achieved when the religious ethnic and regional divide is tamed. And you can only tame it with people without much precedence. People without much following. Yet people that are constructive and have the ability to control men.

If Sardauna today is alive in your situation he will never contest for the presidential seat because of his deep understanding of what the nation needs. He will step down for a more acceptable younger person. It’s on record that Sardauna even at the age of under 60 said he was not going to contest again preparing his only house in Rabah for retirement.

I’ll give you a similitude to buttress my point of priority. A person seriously injured and fractured from a road traffic accident when brought to the emergency room, the first priority of the doctors is to secure an intravenous line. Meaning get a drip set working into his veins to protect his vital organs like the heart and kidneys from the effects of shock and loss of blood. The fractures even though serious and the source of the blood loss may take days and weeks before they are even attended to beside the superficial dressings.

Nigeria now needs peace and stability first. Then we talk of good governance later even though it’s the source of the predicament we are facing.

The present government has already charged the situation and played the religious divide to it’s advantage. It’s in circulation now, a SW pastor calling on Christians and the church to vote Jonathan as their only Savior. This religious card will be used to cover for his deficiency in governance.

Your Excellency, you should understand too, that many if not most of your supporters are also looking up to you to protect them from the onslaught on their religion and region. This also the Christian will never believe the otherwise. Therefore the stage is set for religious confrontation which is the least the nation needs.

What we need as a priority is peace and stability.

From my view if APC can support as an example Ameachi or Okorocha/Kwankwaso or Elrufai or tambuwwal ticket and the PDC will have Ukpabio/Muazu or Ribadu or Shekaru, the next four years will. – insha Allah – witness stability both in the north and south. And the electoral body will get the necessary infrastructure that subsequently the next election will be free and fair and the true reflection of Nigerians.

If you may ask, why can’t this same peace be achieved with you and another Christian running mate?

Gen. you have antagonist, and they are many and also as ardent as your supporters. Your supporters have the biggest proportion of the underprivileged of the society which is the petrol that can be easily ignited by the slightest spark. The spark will be when you’re declared the loser. And you know you can very well lose if the Christians follow their church -and why not in this era of mediocrity.

On the other hand if Jonathan comes back. BH will be real not the political one we see. The turmoil will engulf the whole country not only the north. That is why I also call on PDP to present some other candidates.

My Brother in Islam, please listen to the words of wisdom. And don’t follow the whims of the riff raff. Before they used you the first time to disrupt the second republic, my father advised you against it. Today I am also advising you against contesting in the 2015 presidential elections because you will be used to ignite the nation -a dream well orchestered several years ago- and also be used by bad people as a ladder to grab regional and local powers.

I rest my case here.

My best regards and condolence to your recent loss.

May Allah guide you and protect you from the evil men and the jinn. Amin.

Ikimi withdraws from APC

A founding member of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Tom Ikimi, has withdrawn his membership of the party.
Ikimi
He said he ceased from being a member of the party from tomorrow, Wednesday, August 27, 2014.

The former minister of external affairs stated this in a statement he issued in Abuja on Tuesday.
He however did not say if he would join the Peoples Democratic Party, but merely said he was studying the other political parties in the country.

He said, “I am at the stage of currently critically re-examining the two dominant political parties in our country, which are the APC and the PDP, in both of which I have had close working knowledge.
“I have not ignored the other political parties but in the light of the foregoing, I must now search to really ascertain where indeed my true political friends exist.

“I need to be, at this time of my life where I have friends who share a common vision with me and where my freedom, respect, honour and dignity would be guaranteed.

“Notwithstanding, my enormous contributions over the past 12 years or so to building the alternative platform, after very deep thought and the widest consultations, I have made the decision to withdraw my membership from the All Progressives Congress from today, Wednesday 27th August 2014.”, he said.

Earlier in response to any inquiry on whether the former Foreign Affairs Minister was pleased to be named as a member of the APC’s BoT, a close confidant angrily told our editor on telephone: “anything they like let them use and bribe him. We’re releasing a statement on his next line of action, BoT or not”.

“He doesn’t make empty statements; he will write it and document it well for history. It will be there for you to pick. He has not made any statement”, he said.

It was however gathered that within the week the first national chairman of the defunct National Republican Convention Party (NRC) will issue an official statement on his position in his second public response to crisis within the APC.

Ikimi, in his official response to the outcome of the party’s national convention, attributed his grouse with the party to the tyrannical approach to leadership by some of the leaders of the APC, including Asiwaju Bola Tinubu whom he accused of running the APC as a personal estate.

Why I Defected To PDP – Ribadu

Pioneer chairman of Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, few days after his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has explained the reason behind his political move.

Mallam Nuhu Ribadu
Mallam Nuhu Ribadu

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Ribadu said his “carefully considered decision” to defect to another party was in “in pursuit of a good cause, and never out of any selfish interests”.

Although he did not shed more light on what this “good cause” might be, he said his next step in his political struggle would be made known in due course.

“I know how difficult it may be for you to come to terms with my defection to another party,” Mr. Ribadu said. “But I must assure you that it’s a carefully considered decision for which I do not wish to hurt anyone’s feeling. I’ll not embark on a needless animosity with my good friends, irrespective of political, religious, regional and ethnic affiliations.

“For now, I wish to assure you that my defection is in pursuit of a good cause, and never out of any selfish interests as portrayed by a section. Thanks for bearing with me on this decision, and for those who have been in solidarity with my struggles and still giving me the benefits of the doubt, I’m most grateful. I’ll never let you down on this new path”.

The former presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, who also reacted to a report credited to him in which he disparaged his former political co-travelers in the APC, pointed out that though he had left the opposition party, he would continue to hold the party’s leaders in high esteem.

He said, “Let me quickly make it known that I did not issue a statement disparaging APC and its members, including Governors Amaechi, Kwankwaso… These were clearly fabricated, expected backlash, by mischievous characters interested in misleading the public and drawing a picture of non-existent feuds between me and my good friends.

“My defection shouldn’t be seen as an initiation of political antagonism with my good friends in another party. I still hold them in high esteem, and even where there are marked differences, I believe there are decorous and honorable ways of resolving them. So, kindly disregard any statement said to be by me attacking the personality of any politician since my defection. I’ll never allow myself to be drawn into such disrespectful exchange”.

Mr. Ribadu formally joined the PDP by registering in his Bako ward, Yola South Local Government on Saturday and was given a membership card with registration number 1933795.

CONFESSION OF 18-YR-OLD BOY: ‘I Have Slept With Five Dogs’

An 18 year-old boy, one Ighodaro, an indigene of Edo State, was apprehended on Wednesday August 13, by the people of Iguosa community in Ovia North East Local Government Council of Edo State and handed over to the police after he was caught having intercourse with a dog in an uncompleted building in the area.
Sleeping with dogs
Ighodaro, who was paraded before newsmen at the state Police headquarters in Benin city, said he’s so far had sex with five dogs since he started in March this year..and doesn’t know what makes him do it. The trained welder told Vanguard that two dogs he’d attempted to have sex with before had bitten him but he succeeded in sleeping with five.

“I learnt welding around Iheya. I don’t know when I slept with the dog, I slept with dogs five times. Some of the dogs bit me, I have been bitten two times and each time I have a dog bite my grand father will treat me”, he said.

On how he goes about getting the dogs to have sex with him, Ighodaro said

“When I call them, I will be rubbing their head, petting them so that they will feel free with me. I will be playing with them and they will follow me. They will bark at me some times, and when I notice that it is serious I will leave them. Any one that is friendly with me, I take that one to an uncompleted building and have sex”.

According to him, he had a girlfriend but they broke up last year

“I had a girlfriend last year but we are no longer together. I started sleeping with dogs this year around March. I don’t know what is wrong with me. None of my relations knows I sleep with dogs. In this particular case, the dog is very familiar with me; so it was easy to lure it away. While I was having sex with the dog, one man saw me and ran to inform the Odionwere. They now came to pick me and they asked the police to go and check me and see if I have any disease. I don’t know what is wrong with me”. he said

Speaking on the incident, the state commissioner of Police, Folusho Adebanjo, condemned the act, saying that Ighodaro will be charged to court

“It was the people of that community that arrested the boy and called the police. He was taken to Owotubu Division before he was transferred to the state Police Command Headquarters. What he has done is classified under Unnatural Offences, Section 214 Sub-Section Two which says that any person who has carnal knowledge of an animal is guilty of a felony and he is liable for imprisonment for 14 years if he is found guilty.

“We are going to charge him to court. You can see that the guy is not denying anything. He made a confessional statement that he has been sleeping with dogs since March and he has done it five times.

“I was very worried because this is an unnatural offence and it can bring problem to any community. You can imagine a human being sleeping with a dog what will that dog produce in some months time; , you can see it is a bizarre situation. The boy looks normal unless if he has spiritual problem because I can’t imagine some body sleeping with a dog.

“He said he had a girl friend before; you can imagine if he decides to sleep with another woman what he will give the woman and that is how they spread diseases particularly now that we have different diseases, It is really shocking that we experience this type of issue every day in our country. I am very worried but thank God that the community people have killed that dog because they said what the boy committed was a taboo” the commissioner said.

Ebola: FG Confirms Nurse, 21 Others Quarantined in Enugu, 198 Under Surveillance in Nigeria

An additional twenty one persons including a nurse have been quarantined in Enugu state on a suspicion of likely infection with Ebola Virus Disease.
Ebola Lagos
Minister of Information Labaran Maku told State House Correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting that the affected nurse had primary contact with the late Liberian, Patrick Sawyer, who brought the disease to Nigeria.

The minister explained that the nurse traveled to Enugu from Lagos against instruction not to leave Lagos State, adding that 198 persons are currently under watch by the Ministry of Health to contain further spread of the disease.

Labaran Maku explained that out of the 198 persons under surveillance, 177 of them are in Lagos while 21 are in Enugu.

“All those who had primary contact have been quarantined. Secondary contacts have also been traced. So far the number of people that have been traced is 198. Out of this number, 177 are in Lagos and are being traced. Some are in quarantine, some are being monitored by health specialists.”

Maku said health workers had been deployed to all the border units in the country, adding that “All the entry points into this country and exit points, we’ve port health workers that are working in our airports and seaports. We’re calling on citizens specifically to cooperate. If health workers say you’ve had contact with A,B,C, don’t move to anywhere, respect that judgment. It’s very important. In one or two cases where we’ve had disobedience, we lost one of them and this one now moved with it to another place (Enugu).

“So, we are urging Nigerians, please to help us in making sure that all these messages and appeals we’re making on you, we implement them”.

Maku said in terms of possible treatment, the Ministry of Health had set up a special committee specifically to take claims from Nigerians who believed they could help.

“And so far, we’ve had a lot of reports from Nigerians at home and abroad who came forward to say they’ve possibility of developing therapies that could help in fighting the virus. There is no cure so far anywhere in the world. Even the trial drug in the US is still a trial drug, it has not been established.

“One of the doctors and research experts that came forward was Dr Simon Agwale who has been one of the frontline global researchers on developing vaccines for HIV and other viral diseases. He also came forward and said he could help, both in terms of working out to develop a vaccine which he said he has started work on between himself and his fellow experts in the US and he said this is ongoing. The minister of health has given support and directed him to the committee. He also discussed the possibility of certain therapies they can now use which could be applied. And again, that’s being discussed. And once it’s approved, it could be used”.

The minister also disclosed that the United States was yet to respond to the Nigeria’s request for trial drugs for the treatment of Ebola victims.

“We are still hoping that the US will grant our request for the trial drugs. So, our request is still on course”, he said.

According to him, Nigeria has responded to the outbreak of Ebola with the best international standard by declaring emergency and putting measures in place to prevent further spread.

He said only two of the 10 Nigerians who had so far tested positive to the virus had died; while others were still undergoing treatment.

“We’ve developed a communication plan under implementation using traditional media—radio, newspapers and TV–to educate citizens on Eboa. Part of the measures is advocacy visits to groups, road transport workers and owners in order to sensitise Nigerians especially on the need for strict hygienic measures. We’re pleased with cooperation from religious leaders. People no longer place holy communion on people’s mouths. We’ve introduced laboratory screens at worship centres. We’re urging continued vigilance at worship places.

“We’re also pleading with people who’ve contact with any known case to quickly report to health centres to save other people’s lives. The reason for reporting doesn’t mean you’ve contracted the disease, it’s just to keep you under observation. Most people have survived because they reported early enough and got quick intervention.

Efforts have been made to provide personal protective equipment for health workers”, he said.

The minister dismissed the claim that cases of Ebola had been reported in Abuja, saying “we pray it doesn’t happen”.

He cautioned the media against unverified reports which, he said could fuel anxiety and damage the country’s image.

Maku also warned those spreading rumours that could endanger public health, saying they could be traced and prosecuted.

“I advised him to go towards the uncompleted building but as he went to the building, he caught the boy sleeping with his dog.” he said.

Osagiator recounted; “I was walking along the street. I saw a dog following me and I carried it like a baby and, thereafter, I decided to take it to an uncompleted building where I did what I did to it. It was there that one man came into the building and arrested me.”

The owner of the dog disowned the pet, saying “I have nothing to do with the dog again.”

A leader in the community called the act an abomination. The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Noble Uwoh, said the boy had been arrested and taken to the state police headquarters for more investigation.

Ebola: Liberian NEC Recommends Postponement of Midterm General Election

Following declaration of state of emergency in the wake of the outbreak of the Ebola Virus in Liberia, the National Elections Commission (NEC) is recommending the postponement of the October 14, 2014 Special Senatorial Election.
LIberia NEC
The Chairman of the Commission, Cllr. Jerome George Korkoya, said the NEC may be unable to deploy staff in the field to conduct Civic/Voter Education as well as recruit and deploy 25,000 polling staff at polling centers in Liberia.

Chairman Korkoya said the Commission’s recommendation is also based on the fact that the Ebola outbreak would hinder the smooth conduct of campaign activities by candidates who are desirous of contesting the October 14, 2014 Special Senatorial Election.

He said the health emergency in Liberia may affect the conduct of free, fair, transparent and credible election on October 14, 2014.

The NEC Chairman made the recommendation Wednesday at a meeting with political parties and individuals whose names were recently published on the provisional list of candidates for the Election.

The Commission recommended that the election be postponed to the first week in December, 2014.

In response, attendees of the meeting however noted that due to the constitutional nature of the Special Senatorial Election, the Commission should take the appropriate steps to ensure that such recommended postponement is done in line with the laws of Liberia.

The meeting which was attended by more than 90 persons representing political parties, and independent candidates, was the second in a series of meetings held with stakeholders in the electoral process in Liberia.

On Tuesday, the Commission held similar meeting with representatives of civil society organizations involved with electoral activities operating under the banner of the Elections Coordinating Committee (ECC).

Meanwhile, the Commission will meet with religious leaders in Liberia on Thursday, August 7, 2014 to discuss similar matter with them.

Ebola: 27 Secondary Contacts with Health Workers Identified, Life Insurance For Medical Experts

The Lagos State Government has begun an intensive search for 27 secondary contacts, who might have come close enough to doctors, nurses and health workers, who attended to the late Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer, at a Lagos private hospital.
Ebola Doc
Sawyer, who was infected with the deadly Ebola virus in his native Liberia, died in the Obalende, Lagos-based hospital over one week ago, four weeks after he was admitted there.

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, who spoke in Lagos on Wednesday, said government was also planning a life insurance cover for doctors and other health professionals, who volunteered to work with experts monitoring and testing suspected cases of the Ebola Virus Disease.

The commissioner, who addressed a press conference, said the government was presently facing a shortage of experts, doctors and health workers needed to attend to those that had been infected and those that were going to be isolated for monitoring.

He said, “We will provide a life insurance for any doctor, nurse and other experts that want to work with isolated patients. We need more hands, because we have moved from the stage of primary contacts to secondary contacts.

“We are tracing all the people that had contact, not just with (the late) Sawyer, but those that had contacts with the health workers and others that have died.

“We have identified 27 secondary contacts already, we tracing the addresses of others.

“It is a tedious task, because we will also be taking their blood samples for testing and we will be monitoring them.

“We are appealing to the doctors on strike to resume work and set aside their grievances. No doubt, this situation is a dire emergency and our health professionals must recognise that.

“It will be morally unjustifiable for us to call for help from the international community if our own experts and doctors are not working.

“The bottom line is that we cannot provide the requisite expertise needed to manage these confirmed and probable cases”.

Idris said government would also be evacuating tuberculosis patients at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Yaba, Lagos, to another hospital to accommodate more suspected and isolated cases of Ebola Virus Disease.

The commissioner said, “The TB patients at Mainland Hospital were protesting this morning but we appealed to them, that if they stay there they might be exposed and get infected.

“If we need to evacuate any hospital to ensure that we contain this disease, we will do it. If we have to take suspected cases to LASUTH, we will do it. If we need to take decisions that will be inconvenient for some people but beneficial to the larger population, we will do it. Ebola is a highly infectious disease. We will do it to contain it”.

Suntai Still Governor Of Taraba- Umar, State Acting Gov Insists

Taraba State Acting Governor, Garba Umar, has refuted recent reports making the rounds that he has abandoned the ailing Governor Danbaba Suntai and has hijacked all government structures, describing them as untrue and the handiwork of disgruntled politicians.

Umar has stated emphatically that he has only been holding brief pending when Governor Suntai would recover and resume work as the substantive Governor.

Governor Suntai has been out of office due to his long incapacitation resulting from injuries he sustained in a helicopter crash 2years ago.

According to Umar, those who are peddling the rumour are politicians who wanted to take advantage of Suntai’s condition to pursue their selfish ambitions and malign him with his boss to create a political war in the state; because they found out they were in close contact and enjoy robust relationship.

Debunking the rumour with newsmen in Kaduna, Secretary to the Taraba State Government, Mr. Garvey Yawe, said that contrary to such negative insinuations by some aggrieved political associates of Suntai, the Acting Governor has been in close contact with his boss, and always consults him on every decision he takes in day to day running of the state as he (Suntai) remained Governor.

He added that the Government has been shouldering the medical bills of the ailing governor since he had the accident that almost claimed his life, and for which he has been undergoing treatment in the United Kingdom and would soon resume to work.

He also spoke on the incessant communal clashes rocking some parts of the state, whereby several people have been killed. He accused some highly placed individuals in the state of frustrating all the peace efforts initiated by the State Government to end the crisis.

A cremation urn has been prepared for dispatch to the family. The vehicle that conveyed the remains was also fully decontaminated,” he stated.
According to Idris, government could categorically state that as of today only one case of imported Ebola and one death had been recorded in Lagos, saying that no Nigerian had been infected, but that all contacts were being actively followed.
“We call on all Nigerians to be calm and not panic and do hereby assure them that both the State and Federal Governments are up in arms to ensure that the virus did not escape and that no Nigeria is infected with this virus,” he assured.

“An initial diagnosis of suspected Viral Haemorrhagic fever was made. He was admitted and investigations were carried and supportive treatment was commenced. The private hospital immediately notified the State Ministry of Health who also notified the Federal Ministry of Health. The patient however died at about 6.50am on the 25th July 2014,” he explained.
Idris disclosed that the Joint Federal and State Team on the basis of all experiences gathered from the response to this outbreak recommended to mobilize funding for response activities, logistics and supplies; train and orientate health staff on the Ebola outbreak response Standards Operating Procedures and supply laboratory diagnostic supplies or activate the mobile VHF laboratory.
